Your hair is a crown - new photo exhibition

'Your hair is a crown' is the name of a series of photos I have taken over the last fews years, currently on display in Shepherds, Hay-on-Wye. Hairdressing salons have an amazing aesthetic. I love the glittering decor, the hair rollers, dryers, highlighting solutions, the smell of hairspray, the often random wallpaper, the characters and the conversations. I love the 70s or even 60s vibe in some places. They are so atmospheric. Also there’s often a real closeness between the hairdressers and their customers. It’s almost like a family. People sit and talk to their hairdressers for an hour - it can be an important part of your social life to go and have your hair set. Of all the hairdressers I’ve been to, my request to take pictures has only been turned down once. The rest of the time, people have either been flattered or bemused.

‘Hairdressers are a wonderful breed. You work one-on-one with another human being and the object is to make them feel so much better and to look at themselves with a twinkle in their eye.’ Vidal Sassoon.
